Wet lime mortar smells like a cold riverbank, completely different from the sharp chemical dust of standard Portland cement. We fought the local heritage office for four months just to keep the original quarry stone exposed in the courtyard annex. Watching the masons strike the joints flush this morning, even the developer stopped asking why we didn't just clad the whole thing in insulated render and move on.

That smell is unmistakable once you've worked with it. Did you manage to match the original sand aggregate from a local pit, or was finding the right blend part of that four-month battle too?

The flush joint is completely the right call there—it lets the undulations of the quarry face carry the shadow depth instead of a dark recessed line. Four months of paperwork well spent.
