Why did I choose structural logic over pure design when I started out? Honestly, I couldn't trust a beautiful drawing if I didn't know how it was going to transfer its weight to the earth. Thirty years ago, figuring out a tricky cantilever meant hours with a pencil, calculating moment connections until my wrists cramped. Today, the younger engineers in our Rugge studio run stress analyses in seconds, turning load paths into glowing heat maps on a screen. The speed is wild, but the core of the work hasn't changed as much as people think. A computer can calculate the tension in a joint, but it still won't tell you if a steel frame is going to feel right when you stand beneath it in the rain. 📐
