About Whitney Independent Study Program

The Whitney Independent Study Program (ISP), situated in New York City, is an experimental, tuition-free program within the Whitney Museum of American Art. Since 1968, the ISP has fostered critical thinking, cross-disciplinary scholarship, and innovative artistic practices, and has been a vital incubator for artists, curators, and scholars. The program is dedicated to examining the historical, social, and intellectual conditions of artistic production. It encourages theoretical and critical study through three interrelated parts: Studio Program, Critical Studies Program, and Curatorial Program. The ISP cultivates a rigorous intellectual environment through seminars, reading groups, workshops and studio visits. Housed in Roy Lichtenstein's former Greenwich Village studio, the ISP provides instruction, space, and support needed to pursue artistic endeavors.
