About University of Notre Dame, Rome studies program

The University of Notre Dame Rome Studies Program, established in 1969, offers an unparalleled immersion into architectural education. It uniquely requires all third-year undergraduate architecture students to spend a full academic year in Rome, with graduate students completing a semester. The program leverages the Eternal City as a living laboratory for classical and vernacular urban architecture. Students engage in urban and architectural studios, history and theory classes, and hand sketching. The program is housed across two main facilities: a research, teaching, and learning facility on Via Ostilia, and Notre Dame’s Villa on the Celio, which serves as a residential living-learning community for undergraduates. This deep cultural immersion extends beyond Rome through travel across Italy and Europe, fostering a universal approach to design rooted in respect for place and tradition.
