University of Ife, Nigeria

Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife), founded in 1961 in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, stands as a testament to Nigeria's post-independence aspirations and a landmark of modernist architecture. Designed by Israeli architect Arieh Sharon, a Bauhaus graduate, the campus is his largest project outside of Germany and Israel. The architectural design integrates local artistic motifs within modernist buildings, reflecting an African sensibility within a European context. Sharon's design confronts the challenge of Nigeria's climate by creating buildings that allow the free circulation of air, protection from heavy rain, and defense against the harsh sun. Envisioned as a self-sufficient community, the campus is divided into zones for administration, faculty, student housing and staff apartments. The architecture, devoid of doors, blurs the lines between interior and exterior spaces, fostering a connection with nature. The university's architecture embodies a blend of machine-age aesthetics, unity of arts and crafts, and adaptation to the local climate.
