About Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino

Founded in 1538, Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino stands as the first university in the Americas. Established by papal bull and later recognized by the Spanish Crown, its historical roots are deeply intertwined with the Church and Convent of the Dominicans. Modeled after the University of Alcalá, it became a standard-bearer of medieval ideology during the Spanish Conquest. Though its operations were not continuous due to wars and occupations, it reopened and evolved, eventually becoming the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). Today, the university continues its mission of providing comprehensive education, emphasizing ethical values, critical thinking, and a commitment to social responsibility, shaping future leaders in Santo Domingo and beyond.
