Syracuse University in Florence

The Syracuse University in Florence architecture program is a semester-long study abroad experience that combines on-site analysis of architecture and urban space with design research. It fosters speculation on the relation of architecture to its history and contemporary culture. Based at the Daniel and Gayle D'Aniello Syracuse University Program in Florence, in the Villa Rossa and Palazzo Donatello, the program focuses on discussion, observation, and analysis of Florence's architecture and historic fabric. Students engage with historical and theoretical texts, guest lecturers, and design workshop leaders from across Europe. Observation includes weekly excursions to significant Classical, Renaissance, Baroque, Modern, and Contemporary works across Italy. Analysis occurs in the field and studio through drawing and directed design research, with projects encouraging a critical response to acquired knowledge and raised issues. The program challenges Eurocentric histories in architectural pedagogies, investigating the negotiation of local-historical traditions and global-contemporary values using Italy as a site of investigation. Through fieldwork, students experience Italy's rich cultural heritage and develop design sensibilities for intervention in complex cultural sites.
