About Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne

The McEwen School of Architecture, established in 2013, stands as Canada's first new architecture school in over 40 years. It offers a unique tri-cultural educational experience for Indigenous, Anglophone, and Francophone students, providing French-language studio courses and integrating Indigenous Elders into its core. The curriculum focuses on resilient architecture and fabrication techniques tailored for northern latitudes, emphasizing Indigenous culture, wood construction, local ecologies, and climate change design. The school champions hands-on, experiential learning through various design-build and community-design projects. Its campus, recognized for its award-winning design, creatively blends the adaptive reuse of historic structures with new buildings that showcase innovative cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction. This serves as a live teaching laboratory for sustainable and community-based design practices relevant to northern environments.

Requirements

Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS): Minimum overall average of 75% in 6 best Grade 12 U/M courses, including 1 Grade 12 English U/M, 2 Grade 12 U/M Math courses, and 3 other Grade 12 U/M courses. Requires an application package including a portfolio and a statement of interest. A portfolio sponsor (non-family member) is mandatory.

Master of Architecture (M.Arch) Direct Entry (2-year program): Pre-professional architecture degree (BAS, BES, BEDS, etc.) that meets CACB accreditation requirements. Overall GPA of at least 70% (minimum Laurentian University GPA 5.5). Requires a portfolio and a letter of interest.

Master of Architecture (M.Arch) Qualifying Year (3-year program): For applicants with a 4-year undergraduate degree in architecture or a closely related field from a non-pre-professional program.
