About Instituto Superior de Arte

The Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), now known as the University of the Arts, was established on July 29, 1976, evolving from the National Art School (ENA) founded in 1962. Located in the former Havana Country Club in Cubanacán, its iconic and controversial buildings were designed by architects Ricardo Porro, Roberto Gottardi, and Vittorio Garatti, utilizing Catalan vaults and local brick, and are considered outstanding architectural achievements globally. The institution is recognized for its significant role in the Cuban art scene, particularly in fostering the New Cuban Art movement of the 1980s. ISA's mission is to provide comprehensive university training in artistic creation, cultural management, and arts education. It focuses on developing artists with high academic preparation and social commitment, promoting critical thinking and a humanist, revolutionary conception of arts and culture. It offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various artistic disciplines, contributing to the cultural and human development of Cuban society.
