About Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)

The Escola de Arquitetura (EA-UFMG), founded on August 5, 1930, holds the distinction of being the first architecture school in South America established independently of Polytechnic Schools of Fine Arts and Philosophy. Its core mission involves generating and disseminating scientific, technological, and cultural knowledge through undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, and extension activities in Architecture and Urbanism, as well as Design. The school aims to cultivate critical and ethical individuals equipped with a robust scientific and humanistic foundation, committed to fostering transformative interventions in society and promoting sustainable development. The school became federalized in the late 1940s, joining UFMG. Its current building, notably designed by students and alumni, stands as a significant example of modernist architecture in Minas Gerais.
