Emory University

Emory University's Atlanta campus, envisioned in 1915 by architect Henry Hornbostel, blends Beaux-Arts planning with an Italian Renaissance aesthetic. Hornbostel's unbuilt plans featured an Italian Renaissance colonnade, setting the tone for the campus as an oasis. Although Chancellor Candler favored simpler architecture, Hornbostel is credited with the Georgian marble, red tile roofs, and classic style of the Quadrangle buildings. Ivey & Crook later designed several buildings, becoming unofficially known as Emory's official architects. The campus integrates landscape and architecture, creating a seamless visual experience. The design incorporates the natural landscape, with ravines and creeks enhancing the setting. More recently, Duda|Paine Architects designed the Emory University Campus Life Center, creating a 'new heart' at the crossroads of university pathways, unifying individual pavilions with a broad canopy. Emory's architectural vision supports its core mission, blending heritage with modern needs.
