This program is designed to help students understand and master how to use methods and means of urban design to study, analyze and solve the interrelationship between architecture, space, environment and city of urban construction in urban development and planning and design practice. Urban design is a technical discipline that creates mechanisms through urban space and form to respond to and solve urban problems and guide urban development.

The PhD in Architecture program offers a rigorous curriculum designed to deepen students' knowledge of architectural theory, design, and practice. Students will engage in advanced research, exploring contemporary architectural challenges while developing critical thinking and design skills.

The program aims at educating students to be top professional landscape architects, in areas such as garden design and planning, planning of scenic areas, landscape resource conservation, tourism planning and development, urban landscape construction. It also aims at training students to become profession leaders, working in design and planning institutes or related administrative departments that are engaged in environmental construction of human settlements at national, urban and rural levels, landscape construction of cities and countryside, urban planning and design, planning and design for scenic areas, national forest parks and national geological parks, etc.

SIT is the only university in Shanghai that offers four undergraduate programs in Landscape Gardening, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, and Ecology at one school. Landscape Architecture is the pilot program of application-oriented undergraduate courses and high-level successive secondary vocational education and undergraduate education in Shanghai.

With a history of over 50 years, the major of Art and Design consists of seven specialties, including visual communication design, multimedia design, interior design, landscape design, industrial design, exhibition design, and decorative design. The employment rate of students stays above 96% in recent years.
