About Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

The Department of Architecture at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has pioneered architectural education in India since 1952. As the first of its kind in the IIT system, the department ensures a holistic integration of science and technology with the cultural dimensions of human society. The department's pioneering works include the Damodar Valley Regional Plan and plans for the 'Steel Cities' of Durgapur and Bhilai. The campus, designed under the guidance of Swiss architect Werner M. Moser, is home to approximately 22,000 inhabitants and promotes green initiatives. Today, the department continues to play a significant role in addressing emerging concerns and planning the built environment of the country, with research areas including building technology, heritage studies, urban design, and environmental design. IIT Kharagpur's architecture program balances theory and practical application to align with society's present and future needs. The institute aims to extend sustainable technologies and impact models globally, building solutions in its labs, piloting them on campus, and scaling them worldwide.
