About The New England Institute of Art

Founded in 1898 as the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences, the New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) played a pivotal role in fostering arts education and community engagement for over a century. This institution evolved into a comprehensive art and design college, offering Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees, before merging with New England College (NEC) in 2019. While the Manchester campus closed in 2023, its legacy endures through the Institute of Art and Design at NEC's Henniker campus and ongoing community programs. NHIA was known for its hands-on approach, emphasizing professional development within a close-knit creative environment. Accredited by NASAD and NEASC, the institute provided a nurturing haven where students could explore their artistic potential without reservation. The institute's impact on the arts extends through its alumni, who have made significant contributions to visual arts, performance, and design. Though its physical presence in Manchester has evolved, the spirit of NHIA continues to inspire and shape future generations of artists and designers.
