About SHADE Institute

SHADE Institute is Hawai'i's first public interest design organization, launched in 2015. Its core mission is to deliver community-based planning and design services to underserved communities and non-profit organizations through an annual fellowship program. This program provides intern training and professional mentorship, fostering a dynamic exchange where young talents contribute their skills to Hawai'i while gaining real-world experience. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit arm of SHADE Group, it focuses on architecture and design with a site and climate-based approach, striving for design excellence in projects that consider global, regional, and community needs, and promote a sustainable, humane built environment in tropical and subtropical regions.

Global Track Dual Degree
Master & Doctorate

A unique program in partnership with Tongji University in Shanghai, China, allowing students to earn an NBAA-accredited Master of Architecture (or Master of Engineering in Architectural Design and Theory from Tongji University) and a NAAB-accredited Doctor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii. This program allows students to complete coursework in both Hawaii and Shanghai, China.
