Interaction Design Institute Ivrea

The Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (IDII), established in 2000 in Ivrea, Italy, was a pioneering educational institution dedicated to exploring the evolving relationship between people, design, and digital technologies. Rooted in Olivetti's culture of innovation, IDII offered a unique two-year postgraduate program that fostered a multidisciplinary approach, blending design, technology, and business. The institute aimed to cultivate a distinctly Italian perspective on interaction design, merging culture, technology and service models. Though its lifespan was brief, closing in 2006, IDII left an indelible mark on the field. It served as the birthplace for influential projects like Arduino and Wiring, shaping the landscape of digital interaction. Alumni have gone on to lead design departments in global tech companies. Housed in the Casa Blu, originally designed by Eduardo Vittoria and restored by Sottsass Associati, IDII served as a hub for experimentation and visionary thinking, leaving a lasting legacy on interaction design education and practice.
